Cavalry Units

Tatars (Turkey)

The Ottoman Empire included enormous territories with various peoples who formed the majority of the Turkish army. These soldiers were neither homogeneous nor disciplined. They were armed with varied and often obsolete weapons. Sultans also hired nomadic tribes living in Crimea (Southern Ukraine). Tatars, like other similar units, had no standard uniform and dressed themselves in traditional valueumes. They usually attacked in mounted arrays and were armed with bows, lances, scimitars, daggers, lassoes, sometimes muskets and pistols. Chain mail or leather was used as an armor. Tactically, they fought in extended formation. Tatars were numerous but yielded much to the regular cavalry in their battle skills. With their bows effective at short ranges, they made 10 to 12 shots per minute and could cause a great damage to an enemy.
